What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

If your toilet won’t flush but isn’t clogged, check the tank hardware and water supply. Most no‑flush issues come from a closed valve, low water level, a sticky flapper, a misadjusted chain, or a faulty fill valve.

Quick checks:

  • Open the shutoff valve under the tank fully.
  • Lift the lid; set water level near the overflow tube top.
  • Reseat or replace a warped flapper.
  • Give the chain slight slack so the flapper lifts fully.
  • Aim the refill tube into the overflow.
  • Tighten a loose handle.
